Objectives: This case study explored the factors contributing to the conflict within a newly-married couple considering divorce.
Methods: The data, which consisted of recordings and transcripts from 10 sessions of family therapy, were analyzed using constant comparative analysis, Miles & Huberman¡¯s matrix, and network display.
Results: The researchers identified three types of conflict within the couple¡¯s marriage: explosive conflict, psychological conflict, and shuffling conflict. The elements of marital conflict types consisted of triggering factors, deteriorating factors, and maintaining factors. The researchers found that the triggering factors for the conflict included the couple¡¯s lack of preparation for marriage, the husband¡¯s ignorance about the opposite sex, the husband¡¯s exposure to his wife¡¯s past experiences, and the wife¡¯s low self-esteem.
Conclusions: The results showed that repetitive use of dysfunctional verbal and nonverbal coping strategies served as deteriorating and maintaining factors in the couple¡¯s relationship. These dysfunctional attempted solutions?both coping strategies and extreme measures?had maintained and aggravated the couple¡¯s marital conflict. The article concludes with suggestions for clinical intervention strategies for such relationships.
